30 for thirty is the championship for a series of documentary films airing on ESPN, its sister networks, and online highlighting interesting people and events in sports history. This includes three "volumes" of 30 episodes each, a thirteen-episode series under the ESPN Films Presents championship in 2011–2012, and a series of 30 for 30 Shorts shown through the ESPN.com website. The series has besides expanded to include Soccer Stories, which aired in advance of the 2014 FIFA Earth Loving cup, and audio podcasts.

Background [edit]

The idea for the series began in 2007 from ESPN.com columnist and Grantland.com founder Bill Simmons and ESPN's Connor Schell.[1] The title, 30 for thirty, derived from the serial's genesis as xxx films in celebration of ESPN'due south 30th anniversary in 2009, with an exploration of the biggest stories from ESPN's first 30 years on-air, through a series of 30 1-hour films past 30 filmmakers.[2] [three] Volume I premiered in October 2009 and ran through December 2010, chronicling 30 stories from the "ESPN era", beginning with the network'south founding in 1979. Each film in Book I details a striking sports issue or outcome that occurred during those iii decades, including what Simmons describes as "stories that resonated at the time [they occurred] but were somewhen forgotten for whatsoever reason."[1] Subsequent films, including Volume 2 and online-just shorts, expanded the series beyond the "ESPN era".

In September 2015, it was announced that xxx for xxx would return for a third volume of 30 films, beginning in October 2015.[53]

O.J.: Made in America [edit]

On January 7, 2019, ESPN announced the next gear up of xxx For 30 documentaries.[83] In March 2020, ESPN announced that The Terminal Dance would air before on April nineteen, 2020, due to the high demand during the COVID-19 pandemic.[84]

xxx for thirty Podcasts [edit]

On September 7, 2016, it was announced that ESPN Films and ESPN Audio would produce 30 for xxx Podcasts, reporting on new sports stories using a narrative podcasting approach.[120] The podcast was launched in June 2017, with the start flavor produced and hosted by Jody Avirgan and a team of in-house producers. Futurity flavour accept featured both single-episode and serialized, season-long subject matter, produced "in collaboration with exterior reporters, documentarians, and ESPN talent." Season vii features the seven-part miniseries Heavy Medals, focusing on women'due south gymnastics coaches Béla & Márta Karolyi and their controversial training methods. The series had a slow beginning. The kickoff film, Peter Berg's Kings Bribe, a chronicle of Wayne Gretzky's merchandise from the Edmonton Oilers to the Los Angeles Kings, premiered on October 6, 2009, to poor ratings.[9] [139] Kings Ransom drew a 0.5 national rating and a total viewership of 645,000.[9] [139]

The Cadillac proper noun appears on the 30 for xxx logo, while the Levi's "become forth" slogan appears on the bottom corner of the screen during the directors interstitial comments, which appear for 45 seconds at the showtime of each moving picture and 30 seconds at the end. Commercials for both companies were shown during every break during the original air dates, with Levi's guaranteed a sixty-second commercial slot at the beginning of the third act.
